The Son & Blood on Snow - Jo Nesbo
Over the past years, I've had a great time reading about the investigations of detective Harry Hole, from the series of books by Jo Nesbo. While I've been a bit disappointed by the latest book in the series ("Police"), I just finished both "The Son" and "Blood on Snow" by the same author (but not about Harry Hole). And I was quite happy with both of them. The Son relates the story of Sonny, a heroin-addict who takes the blame for murders he may or may not have committed. Until he realizes some of the assumptions he made were actually incorrect. He then feels driven to set things right, or at least a bit less wrong, in a very chaotic-good fashion. Blood on Snow is a short novel (150 pages or so) about a "fixer" whose job is to kill his boss' wife. Pretty straightforward and efficient story.
After reading Police, my main concern was that the plot would be over-complicated. In the latest Harry Hole book, I felt the reader was being manipulated a bit too much into guessing who the killer may or may not be. I found it quite deceptive and any "twist" (ha-ha got you !) is more frustrating than anything else. I very much appreciated that bot The Son and Blood on Snow did not fall in the same trap.
